Devlog 4: Early Production
Welcome back!
This week was the first proper production week. Some concept art was finalised, some models even made and implemented not to mention that the majority of out main mechanics are up and running. Let's take a look, shall we?
Level
Since last week we've decided on a first level look and lay-out , although lay-out can still change if we feel it would fit the gameplay better. This is thanks to our decision to make the houses and /islands modular. With an array of modular pieces such as rooftiles, walls, beams and doors, as well as rocks and platforms we can make an infinite amount of new ground to play on. Here are some examples of how we will approach that.
Assets
Furthermore, two of our most prominent assets, the interactables, have been modelled and rigged, ready for use. This includes the newspaper, which will server as your offensive projectile and will flop through the air when thrown. The other interactable is a crucial one: The Mailbox. Since this is a vital piece of the gameplay we wanted to make sure it would stand out from the background. It will react so that, when mail gets delivered, the big red handle on the side will swing down and the box will close.
Characters
Right now one of our artists is working hard to finalize one character, including rig and animation, so they can be used in future testing. Besides that some design ideas have been put on paper, but actually making more characters will be something for the next sprint, since this is non-essential.
On the programmers' side
Movement
The movement has finally been finalized! From last week some things were added, such that the player will now be able to pass down through certain platforms. Our programmers were so generous enough to make the artists a simple system to select what platforms will be pass-through and which once will be solid in the Unity project. Besides that things like momentum and tweaked speed and jump height has been added.
Swiping and throwing
The "combat" system also has been wrapped up this week! Especially the projectile function has been upgraded to have a charging function. The longer you hold the button, the farther you'll throw. There's also a helpful trajectory line that will show you where your newspaper will land.
Multiplayer!
We now have a working multiplayer system! We can play up to 4 players, which was our original goal. If there's only 2 people playing the 2nd player can join by pressing f1. More then 2 players will require external controllers. This built of the game will also already load in our level blockout while in the joinscreen.
So far, so good, hope to see you next week!
